When we did Renaldo and Lizahn’s engagement shoot– we faced terrible gail force winds and we were literally almost blown away. Driving to Langebaan from Stellenbosch I was praying the whole way that their wedding day wouldn’t be ruined by the wind either. When Natasha and I arrived at the hotel, where Lizahn and Renaldo were with all their guests. The weather didn’t look promising. In fact, the howling wind brought with it rain…and the cold. However the very next morning, it seems that my prayers had been answered because it was the most perfect day with only a slight breeze to bring some relief from the summer heat. Driving around Saldanha and Langebaan looking for spots I found “Die Strandloper” restaurant. It is the coolest little shack restaurant right on the beach where you can go for a unique eating experience. Having a ten course meal, ranging from potbrood, mussels, calamari and even lobster- all whilst you’re digging your toes into the sand, overlooking a stunning west coast sunset. Anyhow, that’s beside the point- what drew my interest was that the restaurant itself would make for really cool photo’s with interesting design elements, and angles to work with that would also incorporate the west coast fishing village theme of Langebaan. So I asked permission to go shoot there in the afternoon and I left rather excited about this little gem I had found.
However, when we arrived there for the couple shoot later in the afternoon- there was another wedding being held there! Facepalm. What to do now? A large part of the time that I had put aside for the couple shoot was to be spent using the restaurant itself. And we couldn’t really gatecrash the other wedding- although I think that is what the other wedding’s guests thought we were doing! We moved off to the side- out of the way of the other wedding and continued the shoot semi impromptu. The real impromptu bit came when we became bird whisperers. Now it was all new to me too- but luckily sea gulls are inquisitive…and hungry, and they came flocking into our photo as soon as they saw the packet of chips. Yes bribing birds is the way forward. Lizahn and Renaldo are stunning people with such big hearts! And they have an amazing way of making you relax when you are around them, just because they are so warm and welcoming. Their wedding was a real celebration of God’s blessing over this couple and the guests made sure they made the best use of the DJs music, dancing, laughing and partying late into the night!
